Well, firstly, I think we've pretty well killed the "alright vs. all right" debate. Secondly, this has come up approximately fifty thousand times while editing my own work. So, for your debating pleasure, I propose a new topic: the use of commas in a list of adjectives. I contend that, while most lists of adjectives require a comma between each (ex. "the big, blue, metal ball"), this is neither required nor advisable between the last two adjectives if the final adjective is one very often associated with the noun to the point of changing the meaning of the noun (ex. "the big, blue bouncy ball"). Discuss. _________________

Do you really need one between 'blue' and 'metal'? _________________ Graciously designed by Tuelumi

I would say you do, but that's just me XD It's what I've been taught. I'm very iffy on the commas between adjectives rule. _________________ Designed by Tuelumi (:

But how is 'metal' different as an adjective than 'bouncy'? They are both modifying the noun 'ball', right? I'm just curious because this is a rule I think I break often, mostly because the rule was never explained to me very well in high school or earlier. Or even... well, ever, minus here. _________________ Graciously designed by Tuelumi

I used "bouncy" in my second example because in my experience a "bouncy ball" is a very specific, discrete item, to the point that I would almost consider it a compound noun. A "metal ball" is, on the other hand, a ball that happens to be metal. How about this: "A pretty, blonde, little girl" vs. "A pretty, blonde little girl" In the first, the implication to me is that the girl is small. In the second, I picture a "little girl" -- that is, a girl of about 3 - 8 years old -- who is pretty and blonde. _________________

It just comes naturally to me. I break almost all the rules and commas between adjectives just seem silly to me, so I rarely use more than one adjective at a time. Besides, I think that if you say "big blue metal ball" without commas, you'd know that it's a big blue metal ball. (Repeating the same thing, but it works fine to me.) _________________

Tue, it depends on what your describing! These quasi compound nouns like "bouncy ball", "little girls" and "religious fanatic" do not, I think, require a comma between them as they're quasi compound nouns. (Have I coined a phrase?)
